Show, don't tell - Wikipedia

"Show, don't tell" is a narrative technique used in various kinds of texts to allow the reader to experience the story through actions, words, subtext, thoughts, senses, and feelings rather than through the author's exposition, summarization, and description. The concept is often attributed to Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, reputed to have said "Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass." In a letter to his brother, Chekhov actually said, "In descriptions of Nature one must seize on small details, grouping them so that when the reader closes his eyes he gets a picture.By the mid-twentieth century, it had become an important element in Anglophone narratological theory. According to dramatist and author Arthur E. Krows, the American dramatist Mark Swan told Krows about the playwriting motto "Show – not tell" on an occasion during the 1910s.In 1921, the same distinction, but in the form picture-versus-drama, was utilized in a chapter of Percy Lubbock's analysis of fiction, The Craft of Fiction. In 1927, Swan published a playwriting manual that made prominent use of the showing-versus-telling distinction throughout. The American playwright and scriptwriter Mark Swan (1871-1942) "could talk of little else" than the motto he'd placed on the wall above his writing desk "Show–not tell". Swan elaborated on it in his 1927 primer, You Can Write Plays.See if the facts can be told in a scene, or scenes, which give the actors a chance for emotional work, thus getting an emotional response from the audience while it is absorbing facts - in other words sugar-coat the pill." [...] "In the planting of characterization, motivation and relationship: don't 'talk it,' ' show it.' Express these things in acted scenes, not in narrative or description."

America has been turned upside down by a global pandemic, social conflict over sexuality, simmering racial tension and the accumulation of enormous wealth. This is a clever, witty and moving collection with sometimes achingly real portrayals. The themes that unite the stories showcase women and men at moments of introspection, revealing the diversity and genuineness that permeates the multiple authentic worlds that Sittenfeld creates.I was immediately struck by the title of Curtis Sittenfeld’s new collection of 12 short stories, Show Don’t Tell.

r/anime on Reddit: Action animes that live by "show, don't tell"

It's a common complaint about battle shonen genre that everything is explained through awkward dialogue and inner monologues. Even if the animation… Even if the animation is already pretty obvious about what's going on, they will stop fighting just to explain their powers to eachother, or we keep cutting to some other characters watching the fight and reacting to and narrating every move. Sometimes there's even an actual narrator explaining things directly to the audience. Can you recommend me some shows with good action where the visuals speak for themselves.I feel that WT does a good job of explaining something only when strictly necessary for the audience to understand some niche use case while taking many opportunities to "show" the simple tools/powers in action. It can do so thanks to characters sharing most of the abilities from a general pool, so they don't have many new powers to cover.Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood does this extremely well. At the heart of the story is the relationship between the two brothers. But the anime generally doesn't like out and out hold your hand on everything, it does a good job of showing the emotions that link the brothers together.Shows that let us figure out what the powers are by watching them in action instead of getting it spoon-fed to us.

37 TV Shows That Are Premiering And Returning In Fall 2025 That Are Worth Checking Out

There are a lot of new and returning shows to check out this fall, including Kristen Bell and Adam Brody in "Nobody Wants This" Season 2, Mark Ruffalo in an HBO series by the "Mare of Easttown" team, the end of "Stranger Things," and more. One of my favorite shows from last year returns with Season 2 this fall, and I am counting down the days. Nobody Wants This Season 2 will pick up where Season 1 left off, with Joanne (Kristen Bell) and Noah (Adam Brody) navigating their new relationship, especially after Noah ran after Joanne. The series follows an FBI agent (Mark Ruffalo), who suddenly finds himself leading a task force to end a string of violent robberies by an unsuspecting family man (Tom Pelphrey). If I had to pick a show to be THE early frontrunner for next year's award season, this would be it.Matlock was one of the biggest breakout shows last year. It even landed Kathy Bates an Emmy nomination. Now, the hit CBS series is back for round two as it dives right back into what we loved about the first season. Namely, Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) has made it her mission to protect Julian (Jason Ritter) after what went down last season involving the Wellbrexa case. From the team behind IT and IT: Chapter Two, this new series is set in the world established in those two incredible horror movies. Set in the 1960s, Welcome to Derry shows fans what happens when Derry begins to experience some very unusual things, starting with a boy's disappearance.

We’ve known about a TV series based on The Conjuring for a while now, but we recently got news that there’s going to be a new showrunner and a team of accomplished writers behind the series. With the “last” film in the series in theaters now, dominating the box office, this new TV series has plenty of options it could go for. That monster-of-the-week storytelling was what gave us some of the best moments of The X-Files. With the new showrunner and writers for The Conjuring, they all have experience working with Marvel TV series like Jessica Jones, WandaVision, Moon Knight, and others. The series followed antique store owners who had to recover cursed antiques. With the Annabelle series, there’s plenty of room for other cursed objects to make their way to The Conjuring. Friday the 13th: The Series was awesome to see just what cursed object would make its way to the show each week. For the writers and showrunner of The Conjuring, they have plenty of work ahead of them, but maybe looking to the past for inspiration can be the secret sauce they’re looking for. This of course, also asks whether the new X-Files series coming from Ryan Coogler could just take up that spot in our horror hearts.
